What is God like? Can we know? Can we know God?

Some people protest that finite human beings can never really know an infinite God. If God required us to come to Him on our own, that would be the case. The infinite God came to His finite creation so we can know Him. He revealed Himself to us in the things He made, and in the Bible. The Bible tells us that He even took on a human nature and lived among us. Jesus Christ bridged the gulf between God and creation, so now if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. Here is a brief description of Him.

God is love.

1 John 4:16b ESV

…God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

God is good.

Psalm 100:5 ESV

For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

God is righteous.

Romans 3:21-23 ESV

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

God is just.

Romans 3:24-26 ESV

and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

God rewards the faithful.

Hebrews 11:6 ESV

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

God will punish unbelievers.

John 3:36 ESV

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

God is wise.

Job 12:13 ESV

With God are wisdom and might;
he has counsel and understanding.

God is all knowing.

Psalm 147:5 ESV

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.

God is all powerful.

Luke 18:27 ESV

But he said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”

God is everywhere.

Psalm 139:7-10 ESV

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.

God is near to everyone.

Acts 17:26-28 ESV

And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for

‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,

‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

God is knowable.

John 17:3 ESV

And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
