Genesis 1:24-31 ESV

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

On the sixth day God created the land animals and human beings. When He created the animals He said, “It is good,” but when He created humans He said it was “very good.”

He created the man and the woman in His own image. Then He blessed them and gave them authority over all living things on earth. Humans were uniquely endowed with God’s own image and blessing. He set them apart from and over the rest of His creation.

Some evolutionary scientists would seek to deny the uniqueness of human beings and classify them as one of the primates. To the naturalist, human beings are just apes with highly developed brains. The genomes of chimpanzees and humans have recently been mapped and the two species are 96% the same.

This seems like irrefutable evidence that chimps and humans are closely related, but is it?

What scientists are now discovering is it’s not quite that simple. Evolution cannot explain the main difference between humans and primates (and all other animal life), the human mind.

Since mapping and sequencing the human genome, scientists have discovered that although the genetic makeup up chimps and humans is similar, the number of unique proteins is probably more than one million. While this might explain the differences between humans and chimps, it doesn’t explain the why.

Why are humans so much more intelligent than chimpanzees, and all other animals?

Evolutionary adaptations can’t explain it.

Who really thinks that other than this crazy creationist blogger? These Darwinists!:

Despite striking differences in cognition and behavior between humans and our closest primate relatives, several studies have found little evidence for adaptive change in protein-coding regions of genes expressed primarily in the brain.~Courtney C. Babbitt

The developmental mechanisms through which the cerebral cortex increased in size and complexity during primate evolution are essentially unknown.~N. Lambert

Even the fact that we have a highly developed brain does not explain humanity’s rational nature. The chemical makeup of the human brain is identical to the chemical makeup of common beach sand. How did consciousness arise from unconscious matter? There is no natural explanation, and I am certain there never will be. The best explanation for human consciousness and rationality is that it came from an intelligent supernatural Being.

As Malcolm Wallace told young William in the movie Braveheart, “It’s our wits that make us men.” Naturalistic scientists cannot explain where we got our wits from an evolutionary point of view, but Scripture tells us plainly:

God created man in his own image.

This doesn’t mean we physically look like God. The Bible describes the creation of man in detail in Genesis chapter 2:7 (KJV) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Human beings aren’t simply biological creatures. When you look at a man, you see his body, but you don’t see him.

You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.
~C.S. Lewis

God is a Spirit, and humans are also spiritual beings. Like God they are rational and moral creatures. Humans can think abstractly, think about things that aren’t directly in front of them, or things that can’t be seen. Only humans can philosophize and consciously create art.

Only humans communicate with a true language. We can teach primates sign language, but they can’t even form complete sentences. You’ll never read a blog written by a chimpanzee.

Only humans have the distinction of being created in God’s image.
