But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. ~Jesus, Matthew 24:36 (ESV)

Have you heard? Jesus is coming returning on May 21st, 2011–at least according to one group that is posting their message on billboards lately.

I am 110% He will not return on the 21st, just as sure as He did not return in 1988.

How can I be so sure?

First of all, anyone who claims to know the day or hour of the Lord’s return, when the Man explicitly states no man knows, is at best a fool, or at worst a fraud. Second of all, the Bible lists specific signs that must be fulfilled prior to His return, and some of these signs have not been fulfilled yet.

For now I will list one. Paul warned the church in Thessalonica:

Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. ~2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (ESV)

Clearly, this passage speaks of the antichrist. This antichrist may be walking the earth at this time, but whoever it is they have not revealed themselves by proclaiming to be God.

Despite what some well-meaning believers may have told you, Jesus cannot and will not return at just any second. The signs listed in the Scriptures must first be fulfilled first. Jesus commanded His disciples to watch for these signs and be prepared for His return. We can determine when the time is near when the signs are fulfilled, but we still cannot know the exact day or hour.

In future posts we will examine these signs. In the meantime, are you ready for His return?
